The Adventure Challenge Camera

As camera technology continues to develop and improve, so too does the interest in mirrorless cameras. While these cameras lack some of the features offered by traditional DSLRs, they are much more lightweight and portable, making them a popular choice for travelers and outdoor enthusiasts. In this post, we’ll explore some of the best adventure challenge cameras on the market that are perfect for those looking to take their photography skills to the next level. Whether you’re interested in landscape or wildlife photography, there’s sure to be a model that meets your needs!

What is the adventure challenge?

The “Adventure Challenge” was an idea adopted from a think-tank group lead by members of The North Face and National Geographic photographers. In short, this challenge establishes a goal to go beyond your comfort zone in order to be innovative with nature photography. By doing so, you will begin to discover new aspects about the world around you, as well as yourself. If you want to learn more about this adventure challenge, click the link below!

Why should I use an adventure challenge camera?

If you are participating in the challenge or have already done so, then you will understand that cameras are the most important pieces of equipment that need to be chosen carefully. Through extensive research and personal experience, I have found three cameras that are perfect for this type of photography expedition. These cameras come at various price ranges depending on your budget; however, they all share the same main function- durability. Whether it’s hauling up rock climbs or skiing down glaciers; these cameras will provide exceptional image quality without breaking a sweat. Adventure cameras simply mean business- no matter the conditions.

What cameras are best to use for adventure challenge photography?

The three cameras that I have found to be perfect for this challenge are: The Canon PowerShot G9 X, Sony a6000, and the Olympus TG-4. Each camera has its own unique features, so there is something for everyone!

For full reviews of each camera featured below, please see the links at the bottom of this article.

The Canon PowerShot G9 X

In my mind, this camera provides the best value out of all three for several reasons. Most importantly, it’s compactability makes it easy to slip into any trekking bag or backpack with ease while still being able to capture beautiful images. The G9X also has an amazing  20.2 megapixel, f/1.8 lens that is perfect for low light settings. If you are looking for a smaller camera body to save weight on your next hike or climb, then this is the one for you!

Sony ILCE-6000

This mirrorless camera packs a serious punch with its 24 mega pixel, 1080p video capabilities at 60fps, and 11 fps burst mode! The Sony a6000 comes packed full of technology that makes it perfect for adventure photographers including eye autofocus and fast focusing abilities. While being lightweight is not the primary function of the a6000 , it does have great balance between quality lenses and compacted size. I would recommend this camera to those looking for a lightweight, sleek camera that doesn’t compromise on quality.

Olympus TG-4

If you are looking for something with an extreme zoom but still compact in size, the Olympus TG-4 is perfect for your next journey! The 12 mega pixel lens helps bring excellent images and video at 40fps and 1080p HD. This tough camera has passed military standards which makes it fully waterproof up to 15m/49ft and crushproof up to 220 lbf/100kgf; not to mention dustproof as well. My favorite feature of the TG-4 would be it’s f 2/.0 lens which helps provide exceptional low light range compared to other lenses on adventure cameras. While this camera might not be the sleekest to look at, it gets the job done.
